I was 16 years old and had been deer hunting since as early as I can remember. I’d started bow hunting a couple years earlier because it meant being able to add more time to the short, three-week gun season we had back then.
BUT…right in the middle of bow season there came a ONE-WEEK hiatus!
Why was I being robbed of this ENTIRE WEEK of bow season in early October you might ask? None other than six days of hunting in which the only legal means of taking a deer was with - you guessed it - a muzzleloader!
At 16, I of course, didn’t have my own muzzleloader rifle for deer hunting, so I had to ask around to see if I could borrow one. I finally found a friend that was willing to let me use his, and WOW - was it complicated!
You mean, the powder goes down the barrel? The bullet has to be shoved down the barrel after the powder? And on top of that - I have to somehow get a little bitty cap-gun-popper-thingy onto a small nipple without dropping it or squishing it in my pocket? Couple that with the fact that any slight amount of moisture getting even remotely close to the barrel could keep it from actually firing if I ever got the chance.
Oh yeah, don’t forget about the open iron sights on top of the gun that I was just learning to use.
No matter what, though, I was going hunting! The first year I ever hunted with a smoke pole I was fortunate enough to kill a small doe on the last day of the muzzleloader season, and a new primitive weapon hunter was born.
When I first started, I would have been excited if the gun fired without having to unscrew the nipple and add a couple extra PEBBLES of powder before putting the percussion cap on. Fast forward a bit, and just last year my wife was fairly easily able to hit a target at 750 yards with a CVA Paramount muzzleloader.

Adrian has been able to harvest several nice bucks during muzzleloader season. And, two of my most favorite deer hunts were with a muzzleloader - only four days apart.
